1. Copy the two plug-in files ("Export Icon" and "Export Layer Icon") to your Adobe Photoshop "Plug-ins" folder.
1.5. Inside Photoshop's "Plug-ins" folder there may be subfolders for the different types of plug-ins Photoshop can use. If so, you should place "Export Icon" into the "Import/Export" subfolder and "Export Layer Icon" into the "Filters" subfolder.
2. Create your 32x32 pixel icon image in Photoshop.
3. If your image isn't already in "RGB" mode, use the "Mode" sub-menu under the "Image" menu to change the image's mode to RGB.
4. a) If you want to export the entire, flattened image to a custom icon, use the "Export Icon" plug-in located in the "Export" menu under the "File" menu.
b) If you want to export only a single layer of your image to a custom icon, use the "Export Layer Icon" plug-in located in the "Kinetic Creations" menu under the "Filter" menu.
5. The plug-in will prompt you for a location to save the custom icon.

What does Export Icon do?
Export Icon creates MacOS custom icons from Adobe Photoshop® images. Export Icon exports the entire 32x32 pixel Photoshop image (flattened) to a custom icon file, whereas, Export Layer Icon exports a single layer from a 32x32 pixel Photoshop image to a custom icon file. Other than this difference, the two plug-ins behave exactly the same. Export Icon works with 32x32 pixel, RGB images. The RGB image data is (optionally) dithered to create the 8-bit and 4-bit custom icon data. Also, the RGB data is used directly to create an OS 8.5 style 32-bit icon. The icon's mask is created using the image's transparency (or the layer's transparency if using Export Layer Icon).
Installing the Export Icon plug-ins
To install the plug-ins, simply copy the two Adobe Photoshop® plug-in files to your Photoshop "Plug-ins" folder. If Photoshop's "Plug-ins" folder has subfolders for the different types of plug-ins that Photoshop can use, "Export Icon" should go in the "Import/Export" subfolder and "Export Layer Icon" should go in the "Filters" subfolder. The next time you use Photoshop, the "Export Icon" plug-in will be available under the "Export" menu which, in turn, is located under the "File" menu. The "Export Layer Icon" plug-in will be available under the "Kinetic Creations" menu which is located under the "Filter" menu.
Trouble-shooting (fixing common problems experienced while using Export Icon)
Make sure your image's "mode" is set to RGB.
Make sure your image is at least 32x32 pixels.
The plug-ins will use the upper-left most 32x32 pixel area of your image for the icon. If you want to create an icon from a larger image, reduce it down to 32x32 pixels first (use "Image Size" to do this).
If you're trying to export a layer, make sure the layer is selected in the layer palette.
Make sure you haven't used up all your free trials (you get 10) or that you've paid for your Export Icon license :-).
Purchasing Information
BY FAR the easiest way to pay for Export Icon is with a credit card on the web. Go to our online shop at: <http://www.KineticCreations.com/shop> and fill out the online payment form.
Otherwise, paying for Export Icon is still fairly simple. Open the "Purchase by mail/email/FAX" application that accompanies Export Icon. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of licenses you desire. Save, Copy or Print the data from the purchase program and send the data and payment to "Kagi". More specifics on the purchase application to follow.
If you are paying with a Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from "Purchase by mail/email/FAX" and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi FAX number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.
If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the purchase application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi
1442-A Walnut Street PMB #392-3U6
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical.
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the purchase program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment. Kagi can not invoice your company, you need to act on our behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end. Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without the payment, the form cannot be processed. Payments sent via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.
